Chicken Goujons

🍗 Homemade Chicken Goujons

There is something incredibly satisfying about making your own chicken goujons from scratch. Crispy golden breadcrumbs, tender chicken and flavours chosen entirely by your own taste make these far more rewarding than anything shop bought.

This recipe came together using two small chicken breasts, homemade breadcrumbs and a simple coating process. One thing I love about recipes like this is that there are no rules when it comes to seasoning. Some people enjoy plenty of spice, while others prefer a gentler herb flavour. Trust your own taste buds and make them your way.

Homemade Chicken Goujons Homemade Chicken Goujons Served

🛒 Ingredients

  • 2 small chicken breasts
  • Your choice of herbs and seasonings
  • Plain flour
  • Egg wash
  • Homemade breadcrumbs

Serves: 2

👨‍🍳 Method

  1. Cut the chicken breasts into strips. The size really doesn't matter too much as rustic cooking is about enjoyment rather than perfection.
  2. Place the chicken into a bowl and season with your chosen herbs, spices or seasoning mix. There are no rules here because we all enjoy different flavours and spice levels.
  3. Prepare three bowls. Fill one with flour, one with egg wash and one with homemade breadcrumbs.
  4. Coat each piece of chicken in flour, then dip into the egg wash before coating generously with breadcrumbs.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 180°C.
  6. Arrange the coated goujons in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
  7. Cook for approximately 15 minutes.
  8. Check the chicken after the cooking time as all air fryers perform slightly differently.
  9. If required, cook for a few extra minutes until fully cooked through and beautifully golden.
  10. Serve immediately while hot and crispy.

💡 Rustic Tips

  • There are no rules when it comes to seasoning. Use flavours that suit your taste and preferred spice level.
  • Homemade breadcrumbs are a fantastic way to reduce waste and use bread that might otherwise be thrown away.
  • Breadcrumbs can be made in larger batches and stored in the freezer ready for future recipes.
  • Try adding smoked paprika, garlic powder, mixed herbs or black pepper to the breadcrumbs for an extra flavour boost.
  • Chicken strips vary in thickness, so always ensure they are cooked fully before serving.
  • Extra colour on the coating often means extra crunch and flavour.

🍽️ Serving Suggestion

Serve alongside chunky chips, wedges, salad, coleslaw or your favourite dipping sauces. They also make a fantastic filling for wraps and sandwiches.

🌿 Rustic Flow Note

Recipes like this remind me that good food doesn't have to be complicated. A little chicken, some homemade breadcrumbs and a few herbs can create something incredibly satisfying. I particularly enjoy using homemade breadcrumbs because they give leftover bread a second purpose rather than letting it go to waste. The seasonings can change, the herbs can change and the end result can be different every time. That's the beauty of home cooking. Use what you have, trust your instincts and enjoy the journey.
