🍚 How To Cook Perfect Rice
Rice is one of those ingredients that looks simple, yet it can often be surprisingly difficult to get right. Too much water can leave it soft and sticky, while too little can leave it undercooked. Fortunately, a simple method and a little patience can produce consistently fluffy rice every time.
This easy method uses a straightforward ratio of one cup of rice to two cups of water and is a fantastic foundation for countless homemade meals.

🛒 Ingredients
- 1 cup rice
- 2 cups water
- Optional: pinch of turmeric for colour
👨🍳 Method
- Place the rice into a sieve and rinse thoroughly under cold water.
- Continue rinsing until the water becomes much clearer. This helps remove excess starch and can prevent the rice from becoming overly sticky.
- Add the rinsed rice to a saucepan.
- Add two cups of water.
- If using turmeric, add a small pinch at this stage to give the rice a lovely golden colour.
- Bring the pan to the boil.
- Place a lid on the saucepan.
- Reduce the heat to approximately medium.
- Cook for around 12 minutes.
- Keep an eye on the rice while it cooks, as every hob and saucepan can perform slightly differently.
- The aim is for the rice to absorb the water and become light and fluffy.
- Once the water has disappeared, remove from the heat and allow the rice to stand for a few minutes.
- Fluff gently with a fork before serving.
💡 Rustic Tips
- Rinsing the rice removes excess starch and can improve the final texture.
- A pinch of turmeric adds a beautiful golden colour.
- Keep the lid on during cooking wherever possible.
- Different rice varieties may need slight adjustments to cooking times.
- If the water disappears too quickly, add a small splash and continue cooking gently.
- Allowing rice to rest for a few minutes before serving can improve the texture.
