Experiencing Food and Drink From Around the World š½ļøš
Eating food from around the world is one of the most exciting parts of travelling for me. Iām very adventurous when it comes to trying new dishes, and even when something looks very different to what weāre used to in our own country, thatās part of the fun. You never really know what youāll enjoy unless you try it.
This blog sits in my Food & Drink Blogs category and also connects naturally with my Holiday Blogs, because so many of these food experiences happen while travelling.
1. The excitement of trying unfamiliar dishes āØ
When you travel, youāll often see dishes that look very different from what youāre used to at home. Different colours, textures, and ingredients can make a meal feel completely new. For me, this is where the excitement really begins. I enjoy just going for it and ordering something unfamiliar, because you simply wonāt know if you like it unless you give it a chance.
Sometimes the most memorable meals are the ones that felt a little outside your comfort zone at first. That first bite can turn into a lasting food memory linked to a specific place, a view, or a moment on holiday.
2. Cruise ship holidays: food on and off the ship š¢
Iāve been on many cruise ship holidays, and theyāre a brilliant way to experience a wide range of cuisines in a short space of time. On the ship itself, you can try different styles of food every day ā buffets, themed nights, fine dining (where available), and snacks inspired by flavours from around the world.
Then, when you arrive at different ports, you get the chance to taste local dishes in each country. One day you might be enjoying Mediterranean flavours, and the next youāre trying a traditional dish from a completely different region. Itās like a moving food tour, both on and off the ship.
3. Bringing holiday flavours back home š”
Quite often, when Iāve enjoyed a dish abroad, I come home wanting to somehow replicate it. Sometimes that means trying to cook the dish myself in my own kitchen, and other times it means finding a restaurant locally that serves something similar.
Thereās something special about recreating a meal that reminds you of a particular holiday. It can bring back memories of the place, the people, and the atmosphere. If youād like help turning ingredients into healthy meals at home, you can visit my Another Kitchen page, where you can type in what you have and get a suggested healthy meal idea.
4. Experiencing drinks and coffee around the world āš
Itās not just food that makes travel exciting ā drinks play a big part too. My real passion is coffee, and I love experiencing the different styles that countries have. During a recent trip to Turkey, I tried traditional Turkish coffee, which was amazing. I even managed to find a shop where I could buy some to bring home.
Each country often has its own way of preparing and serving coffee, and exploring those differences is a joy in itself. From strong, rich coffees to lighter styles, every cup tells a little story about the place it comes from.
5. Inclusive food experiences: simple or adventurous, both are valid š¤
Itās important to remember that not everyone wants to be adventurous with food when they go abroad ā and thatās completely okay. Some people feel happiest sticking to simple, familiar meals, and thereās nothing wrong with that.
I know someone who went to Egypt and all they ate was pizza and chips. For them, that was comfortable and enjoyable, and thatās what matters. Food experiences should be inclusive: whether youāre trying something totally new or choosing something familiar, the goal is to feel relaxed and happy on your holiday.
6. My ongoing food goal: the traditional Turkish kebab š¹š·
Iāve been to Turkey a few times, and one thing Iāve always wanted to do is eat a truly traditional kebab in a local setting. For various reasons, I havenāt managed to do that yet ā but on my next holiday to Turkey, this is something Iām determined to experience.
Sometimes our food goals take a little time to happen, and thatās part of the journey. Knowing thereās still something you want to try can make future trips even more exciting.
7. Traditional, healthy, and simple foods we can replicate š„
In many countries around the world, traditional foods are still cooked in ways that are naturally very healthy. Fresh ingredients, simple methods, and recipes passed down through generations often create meals that are both nourishing and full of flavour.
Whatās encouraging is that a lot of these dishes are quite simple, and we can very easily replicate them back home. With a few basic ingredients and a bit of curiosity, we can bring those healthy, traditional ideas into our own kitchens. My Another Kitchen page can help you turn what you already have into a healthy meal suggestion.
8. FAQ: Common questions about trying food from around the world ā
Q1: What if Iām nervous about trying new foods abroad?
Itās completely normal to feel unsure. You can start small by trying a dish thatās similar to something you already like, or by sharing a meal with someone so youāre not committing to a full portion. Thereās no pressure to be adventurous ā itās about enjoying your holiday in a way that feels right for you.
Q2: Do I have to eat local food to enjoy a holiday?
No. While local food can add to the experience, itās not a requirement. Many people are perfectly happy eating simple, familiar meals when they travel. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and enjoy your time away.
Q3: How can I bring my favourite holiday flavours back home?
You can look up recipes, buy local ingredients if possible, or find restaurants near you that serve similar dishes. Using tools like my Another Kitchen page can also help you create meals inspired by your travels using ingredients you already have.
Closing thoughts: tasting the world, wherever you are šš“
Whether youāre on a holiday abroad, exploring a different part of your own country, or simply trying a new restaurant close to home, experiencing different foods and drinks can be a wonderful way to connect with the world.
From cruise ship buffets to traditional street food, from simple meals to adventurous dishes, every bite can tell a story. However you choose to eat when you travel, thereās always value in the experience ā and sometimes, those flavours stay with us long after the holiday ends.
