Set in the rolling Devon countryside, it’s a charity built on compassion, dedication, and decades of work to improve the lives of donkeys and mules around the world. 🌿

What started with one donkey soon became a registered charity. Dr. Svendsen began taking in more donkeys, raising awareness, and campaigning for better welfare standards. Her work attracted volunteers, supporters, and eventually international attention. The sanctuary’s reputation grew because of its unwavering dedication to kindness and its refusal to turn away animals in need.

Over the decades, the charity expanded far beyond Sidmouth. Today, The Donkey Sanctuary:

• Runs international welfare programmes supporting working donkeys and mules in communities worldwide.
